Can you go scuba diving if you don’t have a spleen?

Jennifer W asked:

I had a splenectomy last year. Is it safe to scuba dive? I have heard that while diving you create more red blood cells, and the spleen is there to filter them out.

Please, ask your doctor. You don’t want to do anything that will really mess you up physically. Plus you can’t be 100% sure that the people who answer your question know what they are talking about.

That’s a question best left to a Doc that’s an actual dive specialist. It’s doubtful that your own family physician could properly answer it.
You can contact DAN ( Diver’s Alert Network) for a list of dive specialists in your area.
